LunaLock: Ransomware Meets AI Extortion
A new ransomware gang named LunaLock has emerged with a chilling twist: they are not just encrypting data; they are threatening to feed stolen content into AI training datasets. This marks a disturbing evolution in digital extortion, where the permanence of AI memory becomes a new form of leverage.
LunaLock’s debut attack targeted the digital art platform Artists&Clients, stealing and encrypting user data, including source code and personal information. But the real shock came with their ransom demand: $50,000, or else the stolen artwork would be leaked and submitted to AI companies for training large language models (LLMs).
“We will submit all artwork to AI companies to be added to training datasets,” the group declared on their Tor leak site.
This threat weaponizes the irreversible nature of AI training. Once data is absorbed into a model, it is nearly impossible to extract or delete, making the consequences of non-payment far more enduring than a typical dark web leak.

Cybersecurity experts warn that LunaLock’s tactics could inspire copycat attacks. If ransomware groups begin uploading stolen data to public repositories, it could be scraped by AI pipelines and embedded into models permanently.
In response to threats like LunaLock, researchers have developed tools to help artists defend their work. Ben Zhao, a computer science professor at the University of Chicago, created Glaze and Nightshade, software that subtly alters images to confuse AI training algorithms while remaining visually unchanged to humans.
These tools have seen over 3 million downloads since their launch in 2022, becoming essential defenses in the digital artist’s toolkit.
LunaLock’s strategy also raises thorny legal questions. If stolen data is used to train AI models, who owns the resulting outputs? Can victims seek restitution if their work is embedded in a commercial model? The recent $1.5 billion settlement involving Anthropic over AI-copyright infringement shows that courts are beginning to grapple with these issues.
